WHAT THIS WORKSHOP WILL CONSIST OF…
Our Fire Making Intensive is the first class in our new “Life Essential Series” of one-day workshops. In this particular workshop, participants will focus on mastering the art of fire making using various techniques. We’ll start with the basics, such as making successful one-match fires. From there, we’ll explore old Western Flint and Steel methods and modern Flint and Steel techniques. We’ll also delve into friction fire making, including the Bow Drill technique and the fascinating Egyptian Bow Drill. Additionally, participants will learn the Hand and Drill method—a primitive technique relying solely on human power. It’s a hands-on workshop where participants will gain experience and confidence to start fires using any of these methods, even in challenging weather conditions like rain.

WHY WE CREATED THIS WORKSHOP…
Fire making is a fundamental survival skill that connects us with our ancestors and the natural world. I wanted to create a workshop where participants could learn and master these ancient techniques. It’s about preserving traditional knowledge while also equipping people with the skills they may need in emergency situations or outdoor adventures. Fire making is not only practical but also deeply rooted in our human history, and I wanted to share that knowledge with others.

HOW THE WORKSHOP WILL BE TAUGHT…
Our teaching approach is very hands-on and practical. We believe in learning by doing. Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with our expert instructors who have years of experience in fire making. They will guide participants through each technique, ensuring they understand the nuances and gain the necessary skills to start fires confidently. We want our participants to walk away from the workshop with not just theoretical knowledge but also the ability to apply these skills in real-life situations.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT (OTHERS’ STORIES)…
We’ve had many success stories from previous Fire Making workshops. One memorable moment was when a participant, who initially struggled with the Bow Drill technique, managed to create their first ember after several attempts. The sheer joy and satisfaction on their face were priceless. It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do—to empower people and help them connect with their ancestral roots. We’ve had participants who have gone on to use these fire-making techniques in camping trips, survival situations, and even teaching others. It’s incredibly rewarding to see our participants apply these skills in their lives.

Our expert instructors will provide personalized guidance, ensuring that you gain the confidence to start fires using ancient techniques. So, if you’re ready to embark on a journey of discovery and self-reliance, join us at the Midwest Native Skills Institute for the Fire Making Intensive workshop.
