It’s fall! It’s getting chilly and, let’s face it, we’re all a bit bored with the “situation,” and could use some fun! This competition gives you a chance to practice/learn primitive fire-starting techniques and fire lays.
This is for fun and learning. We’re on an honor system here that you gather your own materials, create your own fire lay, and show starting your fire in real time. NO EDITS.
There will be two competitions – Bow Drill and Flint and Steel. Each competitor may enter both competitions.
Rules
Each competitor (or adult family member) must “like” the Midwest Native Skills Facebook page, then create a video that:
- Shows your fire lay and a word about why you chose it
- Shows and identifies your fire-starting materials you’re using
- Shows you creating coal, blowing to flame, laying into the fire lay, and getting the fire lay to flame. 12 & Under may have assistance – with wrist support or bow movement only – to get their coal. The 12 or under must place the coal, blow it to flame, and set it in the fire lay, and bring the fire lay to fire themselves.
- Place #MidwestNativeSkills and #primitivefirestarting in the description of your video to whatever channel you upload your video. You may upload your original video to YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook (“view” settings must be set to public).
- Place a link to your video in the comments of the proper competition post on the Midwest Native Skills Facebook page. Videos that are not linked under the right post will not be judged. Video links must be placed under the appropriate post by the end of the day October 26, 2020.

Winners will be chosen by Tom Laskowski and one or more additional instructors from the school. Winners will be chosen based on the choice of materials, technique, demonstrating an understanding of the choices they made in materials and fire lay, and more.
Prizes are not transferable and have no cash value. Prizes will be honored for 1 year from the date of the announcement of winners (October 29, 2020).
