This is the original Doan Fire Starter and the one used by the US military.

The magnesium fire starter is one of the safest and most reliable way to start a fire. Works in the rain and snow. All you do is shave some of the magnesium into tinder or kindling. Then flip it over to the built in Fire Steel sparking insert and send a shower of sparks into your magnesium flakes. The magnesium will quickly combust into 5,400 F flames, quickly igniting your fuel.
