Ingredients
- 1 pkg active dry yeast
- ¼ C melted butter
- 1 egg
- 5 C all-purpose flour
- 1 ¼ C warm water (110 F)
- ¼ C honey
- ½ t salt
- pinch of sugar (optional)
Directions
- In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in the warm water.
- Add 1/8 (a pinch) of sugar to the bowl to help the yeast start working (optional)
- Let the yeast/water mixture sit for 10 minutes as the yeast “proofs” and begins to foam slightly.
- Add the butter, honey, eggs salt and 2 cups of the flour, saving the remaining 2 cups to be added in Step #4.
- Beat on low speed for 30 seconds.
- Slowly add in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. The will take most if not all of the remaining flour. If using an electric mixer like a Kitchen Aide, use the dough hook attachment while adding the flour and knead until smooth and elastic about 5-7 minutes . (You can also do this by hand, roughly 8 minutes).
- Place the in a greased bowl turning once to grease top.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled; about 90 minutes.
- Punch dough down.
- Shape into loaves.
- Place in greased loaf pans.
- Cover and let rise until doubled, about 60 minutes.
- Bake at 375 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from pans to wire rack to cool.
